Dear NCSY NJ TJJ Bus 6 Family,
After a restful Shabbat our week started out at the Mishnaic Village of Tzippori where we learned about life in the post second temple period. The ancient synagogue was especially inspiring as we could feel how generation after generation continued in their practice of Judaism and that the torch of Jewish continuity has been passed to us.
In the vein of understanding how our Jewish ancestors lead their lives we headed over to Kfar Kedem where we had a hands on opportunity to feel what life was like in the Galilee two thousand years ago, we made pita, had a delicious ethnic lunch and even got to dress up and ride donkeys!
The highlight of the day was the tremendous presentation by Yaakov Selavan about the battle of Tel Saki, one of the first of the 1973 Israeli Yom Kippur War, in which a handful of Israeli paratroopers and armored soldiers stood their ground, fighting off thousands of Syrian troops for three days. We concluded with a “bunker challenge” in absolute darkness and explored how the values that the soldiers personified in that battle can inform our lives today as American Jewish teens.
We have enjoyed our stay in the Golan so much and we now look forward to working our way towards Eilat as we begin to move south tomorrow and relocate to Kalia next to the Dead Sea!
Best,
Rabbi Shmulie Greene
